Nevertheless, Oak is still an excellent choice. It's a genuinely durable timber by all standards, and there are excellent reasons to choose it beyond raw hardness.

If durability, resistance to denting, scratching, and years of everyday wear, is the deciding factor, the numbers point to an alternative wood for your watch.

Ebony sits at roughly 3,000–3,700 on the Janka scale, depending on the species—Gaboon (African) ebony is around 3,080 lbf, Macassar ebony about 3,220 lbf, and Brazilian ebony up to around 3,690 lbf—making it one of the hardest and most dense timbers commonly used for fine work.


Red Sandalwood scores around 2,400–2,600 on the Janka scale (often listed near 2,430 lbf for East Indian/Indian rosewood-type sandalwoods), placing it firmly in the “very hard” range but noticeably below most true ebonies in density and wear resistance.

Zebra Wood comes in at about 1,575–1,830 on the Janka scale (commonly cited as 1,575 lbf or 1,830 lbf), which is still hard and durable, but significantly less dense than both ebony and red sandalwood.

When it comes to wood watch engineering, zebrawood is easier to machine and carve, while ebony and red sandalwood will feel slightly heavier and will likely be more wear-resistant.
